Quand prendre rendez-vous avec un dentiste ?
Un dentiste (ou chirurgien-dentiste) est un médecin spécialisé dans les pathologies des dents et des gencives. Il soigne et conseille sur l'hygiène bucco-dentaire dès la petite enfance. Ses actes comprennent le détartrage, le plombage, l'implant de pivots, les soins des caries, la pose de couronnes et de prothèses dentaires. Il doit savoir lire les radiographies et gérer les urgences dentaires.
Il est recommandé de consulter un dentiste au moins une fois par an pour un bilan bucco-dentaire, même en l'absence de douleur. La prévention est la meilleure protection contre les caries et les maladies des gencives (parodontite, gingivite).
Formation du chirurgien-dentiste
Pour être chirurgien-dentiste, il faut être titulaire d'un diplôme d'État de docteur en chirurgie dentaire. Les études durent 6 ans minimum, dont une première année commune aux études de santé (PASS/L.AS). Des spécialisations existent : orthodontie, chirurgie orale, médecine bucco-dentaire.
